Ascension of the Lord

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
Here are the readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Ascension of the Lord, May 16, 2010.
Acts 1:1-11
Psalm 47:2-3, 6-9
Ephesians 1:17-23 or Hebrews 9:24-28, 10:19-23
Luke 24: 46-53
  • The Ascension is the end of Jesus' bodily, physical presence on earth. How would you have felt, witnessing this event?
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses ... to the ends of the earth.
  • What does this mean for us, today?

  1. Jesus said “Preach to all nations!” Through the power of the Holy Spirit the Church founded by Christ is all over the world now!
Today, as it is in all times, the preaching of Christ’s message is needed! Because as St. Paul records in is letter to the Ephesians “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” St Peter tells us, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Don’t get eaten! We as the laymen and women need to educate ourselves about the one true faith to help define the true meaning, richness and beauty of the catholic faith, to counter balance the culture of death and misconceptions of some about the church. Fulton Sheen said “There are maybe just a 100 people who disagree with the catholic faith, but there are 100s of millions of people who disagree with what they think is the catholic faith.” We need to stand ready to correct these thoughts when every we encounter them. St. Peter said, “always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence”
Now more the ever we need to know our faith because the church is under attack, as always, by those wishing to tare her down. But Christ said, “I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”
